White Sandwich Bread and Buns
By: Amber Grangroth
If you love a soft and chewy sandwich bread, but haven’t ventured into sourdough, then this recipe is just for you!
Made with active dry yeast, you’ll have fresh warm bread on your counter in just a matter of hours!
If you are looking for a sourdough version check out my recipe “Sourdough Sandwich Bread and Buns.”
This bread is delicious eaten warm with butter and homemade jam, toasted, or as a sandwich. It makes the most amazing french toast!
This white sandwich bread is made with all white flour. You can use bread flour or all purpose flour.
If you want to add some whole wheat you can do that too. Just know that the texture of your bread will change. If you are looking for a bread that has more whole wheat, oats etc. check out my recipe “Amber’s Bread”
This bread is sweetened with honey, but feel free to use white sugar instead.
You can use butter, or a neutral oil of your choice. I like to use coconut oil or avocado oil.
This recipe can also be used to make buns. It makes 6 loaves of bread or 6 dozen buns or any combination of bread and buns that you prefer!
I like to use my Bosch Mixer to make this bread. I can dump all the ingredients in and let it do the kneading for me as i go switch laundry loads or unload the dishwasher. But you can mix it in a bowl and then knead it by hand on a floured surface until it is smooth and elastic.
Lets Bake Bread!
White Sandwich Bread Recipe
6 loaves/ 6 dozen buns
Ingredients:
7 1/2 c warm water
2 T active dry yeast
1/2 c butter/oil (i like coconut oil)
3/4 c honey
2 T salt
18-19 c flour
Directions:
1. In a very large bowl or large mixer such as a Bosch, add warm water and yeast.
2. Add butter or oil. If using butter or coconut oil, melt before adding, but be sure it isn’t too hot that it will kill the yeast.
3. Add honey and salt and mix well to combine
4. Begin adding several cups of flour and mix as you continue to add.
5. knead in a mixer or on a floured surface until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add more flour a little at a time.
6. Place dough in a very large bowl and cover with a towel. Let rise until double.
7. Punch dough down and let rise until double again.
8. Dump dough out onto a floured surface and divide into 6 equal parts.
9. At this time, create round loaves with each portion of dough. If you would like to make buns, divide each portion into 12 buns.
10. Form loaves and place into greased bread pans, cover, and let rise until double.
11. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes until golden.
Optional: brush loaves with butter before baking.
Buns:
Place buns in a greased baking dish/baking sheet and let rise until double.
Bake buns at 350 degrees for 18-22 minutes.
Cool on a wire rack and enjoy!
Always find the beauty in life!
